Framed vs Frameless Cabinets - Which Is Right?

When planning custom cabinets in Raleigh and the Triangle, one of the first structural decisions is whether to go with framed or frameless construction. Both have their place. Both can look high-end. But they perform differently in terms of style, pricing, and usable storage. At Do It Wise Cabinetry, we build both — and we help clients choose based on project goals, not trends.

Framed Cabinets — Style and Appearance

Framed cabinets include a face frame attached to the front of the cabinet box. Hinges mount to this frame, creating a traditional structure. More traditional or transitional look. Visible center stiles between doors. Defined cabinet openings. Often paired with inset or partial overlay doors. Framed construction has long been common in American cabinetry and still performs well in classic home designs across the Triangle.

Frameless Cabinets — Style and Appearance

Frameless cabinets, often called European-style, eliminate the face frame. Doors mount directly to the cabinet box. Cleaner lines, full-overlay doors, modern or contemporary aesthetic, tighter reveals and seamless appearance. Popular in modern builds and high-end custom homes throughout Raleigh, Cary, and Apex.

Storage and Space Efficiency

Framed cabinets have a slightly reduced interior opening due to the face frame. Frameless cabinets offer wider drawer boxes, larger door openings, and better accessibility. In kitchens where every inch matters, frameless can provide more usable interior space.

Pricing Considerations

Framed cabinets can be slightly more forgiving during installation and may carry a modest cost advantage. Frameless cabinets require tighter machining tolerances, demand more precise installation, and often use upgraded hardware systems. At Do It Wise Cabinetry, pricing differences are more about configuration and finish than structure alone.

Where Each Makes the Most Sense

Framed works well for traditional homes, transitional designs, remodels with imperfect wall conditions, and projects emphasizing classic detailing. Frameless works well for modern or contemporary homes, tight kitchen layouts, storage-focused designs, and high-end custom builds.

Both options are available within our Wise Essentials, Wise Signature, and Wise Luxe collections. Framed vs frameless is not about right or wrong. It is about building wise. Call (919) 283-1912 or visit doitwisecabinetry.com.
